2007-2008 Art Curriculum

The courses are primarily DBAE lessons focusing on the aesthetics, art history, production, and criticism.  Course objectives are for students to learn history through the production of fine arts.  All lessons are in class projects and are subject to change. 7th Grade:

          Students will use various media to create artwork based on different time periods and cultures.  Students will be introduced to concepts such as style, time period, media, and techniques, enabling them to analyze, interpret and judge the significance of works dating Prehistoric to Present. Fine arts to cover include watercolor and acrylic painting techniques, as well as figure drawing, landscapes, and a still life. The clay activities will include hand-sculpted pieces, wheel throwing, and slip casting.  Students will study various techniques in glazing and firing ceramics.

6th Grade:

            The curriculum will cover 20th century art exploring the works of MC Escher and his tessellations, and Roy Lichtenstein.  Students will study Elements and Principles of Design and use various media to create artwork using a combination of elements organized through the use of the principles of design. Students will be introduced to differences in shape and forms, lines, colors, differences in light and dark (values), texture, balance, variety, symmetry and space.  The clay activities will include hand-sculpted pieces, wheel throwing, and slip casting.  Students will study various techniques in glazing and firing ceramics.

5th Grade:

The curriculum will cover 20th century art exploring the works of Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, and Kandinsky through the use of various mediums.  The clay activities will include hand-sculpted pieces, wheel throwing, and also a slip casting demonstration.  Students will study the fundamentals of glazing and firing and scoring methods.  Students will study advertising designs and create their own marketing ad and cartooning covering style, figures, and faces. 

4th Grade:

            Students will study international mask making, pottery, one & two point perspective, stained glass, Gilbert Stuart, printing presses, Egyptian art, Revolutionary art, caricatures, and Pop art-Andy Warhol.

3rd Grade:

            The curriculum will focus on elements in art studying line. Students will create ink renderings, draw-alongs, hatching & cross hatching, stained glass, pueblo storytellers, pottery, international mask making, John Audubon, perspective, Maurice Sendak, Dr. Seuss, Mona Lisa, and Gorgoyles in clay.

2nd Grade:

            Students will study the Cultural arts: Byzantine mosaic art, Native American arts, Chinese art, Russian art, Greek art, African art.  They will also study elements of art, pottery, Michelangelo, Gyotaku, Solvadore Dali, and clay.

1st Grade:

 The curriculum will cover mosaic art, pottery of Native American art, Michelangelo, Seurat, Russell, Matisse, Cubism, Aboriginal bark paintings, Joseph Stella, line studies, Greek art, Chinese art, Op art, Van Gogh, Draw-alongs, ink renderings and clay.

Kindergarten:

 The curriculum will focus on the great masters in art from past to present including:  Van Gogh, Michelangelo, Giotto, Angelico, Seurat, Russell, Mondrian, Klee, Pollock, Picasso, Hokosai, Duchamp, and Dali.  There will be other seasonal activities and clay activities.

Preschool:

The curriculum is based on the individual class’s thematic units, seasonal activities, and clay.
