Fourth Grade Curriculum

The Social Studies program is the study of the regions of the United States ,  from the discovery of the land to the forming of a country. We learn about the early explorers,
13 colonies, and all the events leading up to and including the Civil War. Throughout the year the students learn the locations, capitals, and abbreviations of all 50 states. Each student creates a power point presentation on a state of their choice and presents it to their class at the end of the year.

Our Reading program includes many excerpts from longer novels to encourage further reading. Many skills such as comprehension and vocabulary are taught. We also read several novels in class throughout the year. Public speaking skills are taught and rehearsed through independent reading projects each nine weeks. We participate in the AR program in conjunction with our library.

Spelling is taught through the use of a book which encourages the student to practice the words not only to spell them but to use them in context. Spelling patterns are taught in each unit.

Math classes divided in order to challenge all students at their ability level. Both classes use the same textbook and cover the skills necessary for the next year’s math curriculum. We use analytical and critical thinking puzzles,  games, and group work in addition to our regular daily instruction.

The Language program allows the students to pull together the skills needed  to be fluent and successful writers in all curriculum areas. We incorporate the skills across the curriculum through the use of writing in all subject areas.

Our Science curriculum consists of the study of living things, matter, the land, and weather. There are two projects that coincide with these topics. The textbook is designed and allows time for class discussions, some light experiments and demonstrations, and life application. We encourage the use of our computer lab and library for project research and web sites which go along with the topics in each Investigation of each chapter.
