First Grade Curriculum

Reading:

A list of ten vocabulary words will be sent home on Fridays.  The students should be able to read the words for the test on the following Thursday.  Please work with your child daily on decoding these words.  The format of the vocabulary tests will change during the second semester to include application of the vocabulary words and story comprehension.  Periodically, students will be tested on high-frequency words (words that are used often such as the and in).  A list of these words will be sent home.  Decodable books will be made in class weekly and sent home for students to read to parents for homework.  Please sign the cover of the book indicating that your child read the book to you.  Book reports will be scheduled throughout the school year.

Language:

Language worksheets will be given for homework throughout the week.  Homework nights may change.  Test days may also change weekly.  During the weeks when tests are not given, grades will be taken from classwork or quizzes, which may or may not be announced.

Spelling:

Spelling words are sent home on Mondays.  The students will write the words two times each on the provided worksheet for homework on Mondays.  Spelling tests will be given on Fridays.  Each unit will include ten words and one dictation sentence per week.  Four or five extra words will be added for bonus.  Correct letter formation and capitalization are expected on the tests.    Every sixth unit is a review unit, and the test will consist of ten words that the students have been tested on previously.

Handwriting:

A portion of the handwriting grades will come from spelling tests.  Handwriting grades will also be taken subjectively from other areas.   Correct handwriting is expected in all subjects.

Math:

Math worksheets will be given for homework Monday-Thursday nights.  Test days may change weekly.  Periodically, there may be weeks when tests are not given.  During those weeks grades will be taken from classwork or quizzes, which may or may not be announced.  It is imperative that students memorize basic addition and subtraction facts.  Please review the facts with your child frequently.  The students will make flashcards in class, and timed drills will be given.

Science/Social Studies:

Science and Social Studies will be incorporated into the curriculum throughout the year.  Assessment will be based on class participation.  Science experiments will be the only formal assessment.

Grading, Tests, and Quizzes:

Tests will always be announced in advance.  Quizzes may be given at any time.  Daily work, homework, weekly tests and quizzes, and unit tests will be used to determine a student’s grades.  Graded papers will be sent home weekly on Wednesdays.  Please review the papers sent home with your child. Sign and return the enclosed comment sheet along with the envelope on Thursdays.  All graded papers must be returned.  Students who do not return the graded papers and signed comment sheet in the envelope will lose recess. Progress reports will be sent home during the middle of each nine-week grading period.  Report cards will be sent home every nine weeks. The first grade grading scale is listed below.

                                    E (Excellent Progress) = 94-100

                                    G (Good Progress) = 85-93

                                    S (Satisfactory Progress) = 78-94

                                    L (Limited Progress) = 70-77

NI (Needs to Improve) = below 70

Homework:

Homework is given as reinforcement of skills previously taught in the classroom.  Please set aside a time and place for your child to complete his/her homework each day, and review your child’s work. The student should write all assignments in pencil.  A homework sheet will be sent home on Fridays.  Homework will be given Monday through Thursday, and assignments will be checked daily.  Any child who does not have his/her homework in class at 8:00 A.M. will turn his/her card and complete the homework during recess.  Please do not bring forgotten homework to school for your child.  Also, do not re-enter the building to retrieve forgotten homework.  This policy is implemented by Kehoe-France School to teach responsibility to the students.

Daily Folder:

Daily homework, checked homework, classwork, and notes to parents will be sent home in the daily folder, which is the blue Kehoe-France folder.  Please remove everything from the folder except the homework that needs to be returned to school.  A behavior chart has been placed in your child’s folder.  This chart should remain in the folder.  Bringing the folder home and returning it to school everyday is considered homework, even if no written homework was assigned.  Students who fail to do so will lose recess.

Newsletter:

A first grade newsletter will be sent home on Fridays.  It will list tests, events, and reminders for the following week.

Attendance:

A student returning from an absence must submit an excuse for the absence.  Parents must send a written or emailed excuse.  A student is considered tardy after 8:00.  He/she must check in at the office to receive a pass to be admitted to class.   Any student checking out early must be signed out through the office before leaving the classroom.
